Friends of Cortes Island wishes to let the community know that we are formally objecting to the proposed expansion of Cortes Island Quarry.

We are deeply concerned that the proposal will cause significant harm to nearby sensitive ecosystems, namely riparian and wetland habitat and fish-bearing creeks. It will also result in the direct loss of a sizeable area of associated forest habitat.

In addition, we are very concerned that the application has been submitted without a comprehensive environmental impact assessment or any meaningful mitigation measures.

While we recognize the importance of local aggregate supply, we do not believe that, given the scale and impact of the proposal, it is consistent with the guiding sustainability principles set out in the Cortes Island Official Community Plan (OCP).  We are also disappointed in the lack of consultation with the local community.

As such, we are respectfully asking the Ministry of Mining and Critical Infrastructure to reject the proposal in its current form, that it be significantly scaled back, and that the proponents are required to undertake a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment, and public consultation exercise. Please see our detailed comments and recommendations set out in our letter to the Ministry (PDF).
