Streams and Salmon
Monitoring streams and protecting fish habitat.
Local volunteers have been monitoring of Cortes Island’s streams for many years. In 2013, some of these dedicated Streamkeepers asked FOCI to establish a formal project in order to help coordinate this valuable program. In 2014, we officially launched our Stream Stewardship project. This important initiative aims to monitor and protect local streams and salmon habitat, through habitat assessment, data collection, restoration, and community engagement.
Streamkeepers
Community volunteers are involved annually in monitoring local streams and salmon habitat and recording what they find. Through Streamkeepers training sessions, local volunteers can increase their field skills, and learn more about monitoring and data collection.
The Creeks
The creeks currently being monitored through this program include: Basil Creek, Frabjes Day Creek, Hansen Creek, James Creek, and Manson’s Lagoon Creek.
